    Filter Capacitors ~ introduction
    Construction

Housed in either aluminium, mild steel or stainless steel containers, the capacitors are either hermetically sealed and equipped with porcelain terminals, or filled with a fire resistant epoxy resin.

Fixing brackets are available upon request and most fixings can be accommodated to meet customer's needs.

Capacitors are normally painted with a self etching primer and finished in Squirrel Grey cellulose enamel, although other finishes are available.

The mechanical techniques employed ensure that the capacitors are fit for the rigorous mechanical and environmental demands of traction duty. A choice of termination is available upon request.

    Pressure Switch

These are only required for abnormal service conditions, or where there is a possible risk of over current or short circuit faults to thecapacitor, which could possibly create a pressure build up within the capacitor, causing permanent damage to the container.

    Operation

Satisfactory operation of these capacitors depends on the method of cooling, whether by natural convection or forced circulation. These conditions dictate the power ratings available from a given capacitor volume, in order that thermal stability (equilibrium) is maintained.

Capacitors are normally derated for the prevailing ambient conditions under which they are operated. The lifetime expectancy is dependent upon these parameters and would form part of the discussion at the tendering stage.

    Characteristics

The following parameters are applicable to the standard range of capacitor which are shown in the following tables. They should not be regarded as limitations of the range available, but only taken as an indication of the product capability. It is understood that many applications require specific capacitance values and voltage requirements, with space constraints which would render the standard range unusable. We have an experienced team to provide designs for such non standard items. NCL would be pleased to consider your specific needs upon request.

Capacitance value: 210µF to 11,150 µF
    Tolerance: ± 10%, ± 5% on request
Rated dc voltage (UN): 1200V to 4400V
Non-recurrent surge voltage (Us): See table
Current rating (Imax): The current ratings given in the following tables are for operation at 1 kHz and for a standard porcelain terminal design operated with natural convection at 70°C case temperature. For current ratings in excess of 250A rms, four terminals may be required.
Operating temperature (qamb): -40 to +70°C
    Storage temperature: -40 to +85°C
Construction: In accordance with IEC 61071 for power electronic applications. Complemented by IEC 61881 (Power Electronic Capacitors used on Rolling Stock Applications) when available.
Dimensions: Four types are available in a variety of can height with floor plans of 340x140 mm, 340x165 mm, 340x175 mm and 400x140 mm. Other designs available upon request.
Terminal fixing/mounting: NCL can provide conventional ceramic insulators fitted with threaded or tab type terminals. However, low profile, synthetic insulator styles are available with a choice of thread sizes to suit applications where low inductance devices are necessary.
Orientation: Any position is allowable, but please advise us if the capacitor is to operate in an inverted mode (terminals facing vertically downwards).
